James W. Knox, Instructor

James W. Knox, is the current Professor of Music at Central Oregon Community College where he directs Cascade Chorale, College Choir and vocal jazz ensemble, Jazz Central. Through James' studies he has had the privilege of working with distinguished conductors and composers from around the world, such as Robert Sund, Frieder Bernius, Veljo Tormis, Fred Stoltzfus, Joseph Flummerfelt, Morna Edmundson, Yaccov Bergman, Maria Guinand, Hirvo Surva, Alice Parker, Charles Bruffy, Simon Carrington, Karen Kennedy, Josh Habermann, Hilary Apfelstadt and Ysaye Barnwell.

His involvement and love for music is also displayed as a baritone soloist. James' work included guest artist at Seattle, Washington's Opera Banquet, Peace Through Music pieces Dona Nobis Pacem by R.V. Williams, Cantata Misericordium by Benjamin Britten, Faure's Requiem, portrayed Jesus in the premiere of J.S. Bach's St. Mark's Passion, Cascada in The Merry Widow, Menotti's one act opera The Telephone, Pooh-Bah in Obsidian Opera's Production of The Mikado, Javert in the local production of Les Miserables. In 2014, he taught in London for the abroad exchange program at COCC. Winter and spring of 2018 he was on his sabbatical leave in Estonia for the preparation for the annual Song Celebration Festival, taught at the Conservatory of Vicenza, Italy and the Miari School of Music in Belluno, Italy. 

James is also an accomplished choral composer and his music can be heard locally and all over the world.  Currently, he is the composer in residence for the professional vocal ensemble, Bend Camerata.  His music is described as a colorful tapestry of sound, blending in old forms with new.  His music is playful, powerful and epic and stretches across many subjects from religious to mythological folklore.
